Momentum Grows for Mashups and Agile in the Enterprise,
According to Serena Tag Participants
Application development expands to include more individuals across an organization
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — November 3, 2008 — Attendees at the 2008 Serena Tag Conference, held in Silicon Valley in September, learned that two major trends are shaping the future of IT and application development: Business Mashups and Agile.
Serena Software has focused on these technologies over the last year in its mission to drive innovation and collaboration across IT and business units. At the Tag Conference, experts from Gartner, and other leading organizations agreed that Mashups and Agile exist today in most F100 companies. They predicted broad adoption of these technologies as IT innovation becomes more distributed.
"Mashups and Agile extend the power to innovate and make positive business changes to every member of an organization, not just traditional application developers," said René Bonvanie, senior vide president, global marketing, partnerships, and online services at Serena Software. "The application development market is clearly expanding, especially as companies look for IT innovations to improve productivity in a down-turned economy."
Agile on the Ascent
One surprise from the event was the realization that Agile is more embedded in F100 companies than Serena initially realized, which indicates growing adoption. Another finding was that Agile is being used for mission-critical application development, like medical billing systems and trading floor systems, not just Web applications like Flikr.
These findings came from the "Agile Story Corps" booth where Tag conference-goers were able to record personal stories about their Agile experiences. The Agile Story Corps is an extension of the Agile methods that Serena and Valtech use to develop products and services. The collected stories will help the development team incorporate user feedback, and will ensure that final products meet the needs of intended users.
Forrester Research said in a report called "Enterprise Agile Adoption In 2007," issued February 6, 2008:
- One fourth of enterprises currently use Agile processes, and nearly half of the remaining firms are aware of Agile.
- The majority of enterprises that are aware of Agile are interested in adopting it or are already planning to adopt it.
- Agile adoption increased 53% year-over-year between 2006 and 2007.
- The larger the company, the more likely it is to use Agile.
To meet the increasing demand for Agile adoption in the enterprise, Serena announced at the Tag event that it will deliver a pure Agile solution based on best practices. Serena® Agile On Demand combines the developer tool with Agile adoption and training services from Valtech. This enables software development groups to add Agile to their development portfolio and support global teams working on multiple projects. Serena Agile on Demand will be available via Software as a Service (SaaS) by the end of the year.
Business Mashups Offer Huge Potential
At the Tag conference, a panel of industry VIPs debated the history, definition and pervasiveness of Business Mashups today. Pundit Bill Ives captured much of the discussion in his blog. Although the panelists brought their own perspectives on Mashups and how they are used by whom, they all agreed that Mashups are continuing to penetrate the enterprise and that the potential is huge. Forrester predicted Mashups will be a $700 million market by 2013 ("The Mashup Opportunity," May 2008).
Panelists included:
- Forrester, Oliver Young, Analyst
- Gartner, Anthony Bradley, Managing VP
- Kapow, Stefan Andreeson
- Oracle, Vince Casceris, VP
- Programmable Web, John Musser, Founder
- Serena Software, René Bonvanie, SVP Marketing (moderator)
Serena announced at the conference that Serena Business Mashups is now available on demand. With no software to install or infrastructure to manage, workers can build and deploy Mashups to automate business processes and be more productive.
